Frequently asked questions about blocked drains:
What are drains, sewers and lateral drains? A drain is a single pipe which transports foul sewerage from an individual property. A sewer is a pipe that takes sewage and waste water from 2 or more properties. A lateral drain is the part of a drain that lies outside of your property boundary under private land or public land such as a footpath or road and connects to a sewer.
How do I know if I have a blocked drain? Blocked drains are usually noticeable by the fact that the toilet will no longer flush away your waste or the manhole covers outside are overflowing. Another identifying factor of blocked drains is often the smell that the blockage emits.
I have a blocked drain, am I responsible/who is responsible for maintaining and repairing them? Do I have to pay for the blocked drain? On 1st October 2011 Thames Water became responsible for the clearance of blockages and repair of damage in sewers or lateral drains. The responsibility for the removal of blockages in drains within the property boundary stays the responsibility of the householder. If there is a problem with a sewer or drain at your property it is important to establish whether the problem is likely to be in the sewer - if so, it is the responsibility of Thames Water. If the problem is in the drain or internal plumbing it is the responsibility of the householder. Unnecessary call outs by Thames Water's engineers may be charged for so talk to your neighbours to see if they are affected. If they are then the problem is likely to be in a sewer and you will need to call Thames Water on 0845 9200 800.
Why do drains actually block and what causes them to block? Drains and sewers may become blocked for a variety of reasons. As they are continually conveying waste and draining it away, it is very easy for them to become blocked. If you notice that the water is not draining away properly after you have had a bath or when you empty a sink it is imperative that you take immediate action as it might mean that the drain already has a partial blockage. It is for this reason that they should be regularly checked and maintained by an expert.
